Length test answers: worked solutions

Question 1 – Units and tools [2 pts]

  1. A flagpole is very tall, so feet.
  2. An eraser is short, so a ruler.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct choice.

Question 2 – Read the ruler [2 pts]

  1. The marker goes from 0 to 7: 7 inches.
  2. The eraser goes from 0 to 2: 2 inches.

Scoring: 1 point for each length with the unit.

Question 3 – Compare on a ruler [2 pts]

  1. The tape is 14 cm and the straw is 9 cm. The tape is longer.
  2. \(14 – 9 = 5\). 5 centimeters.

14 – 9 = 5 cm longer.

Scoring: 1 point for naming the tape, 1 point for 5 cm with the unit.

Question 4 – Estimate and unit size [2 pts]

  1. \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15\). About 15 cm.
  2. A foot is shorter than a yard, so more feet are needed. The foot ruler.

Scoring: 1 point for 15 cm (accept 14 to 16), 1 point for the foot ruler with a reason.

Question 5 – Snail on a number line [3 pts]

  1. \(14 + 9 = 23\). 23 inches.
  2. \(14 + 9 = 23\)
  3. \(30 – 23 = 7\). 7 inches.
051015202530+ 14+ 923
The snail is at 23. It needs 7 more to reach 30.

Scoring: 1 point for each part.

Question 6 – Trail parts [2 pts]

\(26 + 31 = 57\), then \(57 + 18 = 75\). 75 meters.

Scoring: 1 point for a correct first sum, 1 point for the final answer with the unit.

Question 7 – Tree and fence [2 pts]

From 6 to 14 is 8 spaces.

Scoring: 1 point for using both ends, 1 point for 8 cm.

Question 9 – Ribbon problem [3 pts]

  1. \(52 – 37 = 15\). 15 cm.
  2. \(37 – 18 = 19\). 19 cm.
  3. \(37 + 19 = 56\). 56 cm.

Key facts behind this length test answers

Key facts
  • Start at the 0 mark, keep the object straight, and read the number at the other end.
  • A smaller unit gives a larger number: the same strip is 2 feet or 24 inches.
  • Always write the unit, such as 5 in, 12 cm, or 21 ft.
  • Subtract two lengths to find how much longer one object is.
  • On a number line diagram, a jump right adds and a jump left subtracts.
