Grade 2 · Common Core State Standards: 2.NBT.A.2, 2.NBT.A.4
Skip counting answers: exercises 1 to 10
Exercise 1 – Count by 5s
Add 5 each time: 35, 40, 45, then 45 + 5 = 50 and 50 + 5 = 55.
50 and 55
Exercise 2 – Count by 10s
Add 10 to 140 to get 150. Add 10 to 150 to get 160.
150, 160
Exercise 3 – Count by 100s
Add 100 each time: 400 + 100 = 500 and 500 + 100 = 600. Then 600 + 100 = 700 fits.
500, 600
Exercise 4 – Next by 5s
\(275 + 5 = 280\)
280
Exercise 5 – Missing number
\(490 + 10 = 500\), and 500 + 10 = 510 checks.
500
Exercise 6 – Count back by 10s
Take away 10 each time: \(350 – 10 = 340\) and \(340 – 10 = 330\).
340, 330
Exercise 7 – Count the jumps
Count the arcs: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. That is 6 jumps.
\(6 \times 5 = 30\)
6 jumps
Exercise 8 – Compare two numbers
The hundreds are the same (2). Compare the tens: 4 tens is less than 5 tens.
\(245 < 254\)
Exercise 9 – Compare close numbers
600 has 6 hundreds. 599 has only 5 hundreds.
\(600 > 599\)
Exercise 10 – Same number
The hundreds, tens and ones are all the same.
\(318 = 318\)
Exercises 11 and up
Exercise 11 – Compare with blocks
Both have 4 hundreds. The top has 1 ten and the bottom has 2 tens.
\(412 < 421\)
Exercise 12 – Write a sentence
706 has 7 hundreds and 670 has 6 hundreds.
\(706 > 670\)
Exercise 13 – Order the numbers
842 has the most hundreds, so it is greatest. 482 and 428 both have 4 hundreds. Compare the tens: 2 tens is less than 8 tens.
So 428 < 482 < 842.
428, 482, 842
Exercise 14 – Greatest number
95 has no hundreds, so it is least. 509 and 590 both have 5 hundreds. 9 tens is more than 0 tens.
590
Exercise 15 – Count the nickels
Count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40.
\(8 \times 5 = 40\)
40 cents
Exercise 16 – Boxes of paper
Count by 100s: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700.
700 sheets
Exercise 17 – Cross 300
Add 10 each time. 280 + 10 = 290. 290 + 10 = 300. 300 + 10 = 310. 310 + 10 = 320.
290, 300, 310
Exercise 18 – Find the rule
Each number is 5 more than the one before it.
The rule is count by 5s. Next: 130 + 5 = 135.
Count by 5s; 135
Exercise 19 – Stamp collections
Both have 3 hundreds. Compare the tens: 5 tens is more than 4 tens.
\(354 > 345\)
Aisha has more stamps.
Exercise 20 – Jumping jacks
List the numbers: 150, 160, 170, 180, 190. The fifth number is 190.
190
Exercise 21 – Mystery digit
Try tens digits. 462 is not greater than 463, because 6 tens and 2 ones is less than 6 tens and 3 ones.
472 is greater than 463 because 7 tens is more than 6 tens.
7
Exercise 22 – Count back by 100s
Take away 100 each time: \(900 – 100 = 800\) and \(800 – 100 = 700\). Then 700 – 100 = 600 checks.
800, 700
Key facts behind this skip counting answers
