This 4th grade multiplicative comparison test answer key covers multiplicative comparison (Common Core 4.OA.A.1, 4.OA.A.2), with a free PDF to print.
Key takeaway: This answer key helps fourth grade students see how each point on the multiplicative comparison test was earned.
- Topic: Multiplicative Comparison (4th grade)
- Content: Worked solutions and a scoring guide for 9 questions
- Standards: 4.OA.A.1, 4.OA.A.2
- Answers: Every step shown, with the method to review
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This answer key helps fourth grade students see how each point on the multiplicative comparison test was earned. Also, it gives complete solutions to all nine questions, with the equation, the answer, and a sentence of reasoning for each.
Question 2 shows the difference between an additive and a multiplicative sentence, question 7 solves a chain of two comparisons, and question 8 explains why adding 6 and 4 does not describe 4 times as many. Add your points out of 20, then spend about 15 minutes redoing every question that lost credit. Then, write each correction as an equation and a sentence.

4th grade multiplicative comparison test answer key: worked solutions
1 – Equations and sentences [2 pts]
- 36 is 9 times as many as 4. (Also correct: 36 is 4 times as many as 9.)
- \(56 = 7 \times 8\)
Scoring: 1 point for each correct part.
2 – More and times [2 pts]
- \(20 – 5 = 15\). Sofia has 15 more stickers than Mei.
- \(20 = 4 \times 5\). Sofia has 4 times as many stickers as Mei.
Scoring: 1 point for each sentence with the correct number.
3 – Bar model [2 pts]
\(p = 3 \times 8 = 24\)
24 pencils
Scoring: 1 point for the equation. 1 point for 24.
4 – Unknown length [2 pts]
\(21 = 7 \times s\). Divide: \(s = 21 \div 7 = 3\).
Check: \(7 \times 3 = 21\).
3 feet
Scoring: 1 point for the equation. 1 point for 3 feet.
5 – How many times [2 pts]
\(72 = n \times 9\). Divide: \(n = 72 \div 9 = 8\).
Also, check: \(8 \times 9 = 72\).
8 times as much
Scoring: 1 point for the equation. 1 point for 8.
6 – Saving money [2 pts]
- \(4 \times 15 = 60\). \(\$60.00\)
- \(60 – 15 = 45\). \(\$45.00\) more
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
7 – Marble collection [3 pts]
- \(5 \times 6 = 30\). 30 marbles
- \(3 \times 30 = 90\). 90 marbles
- \(6 + 30 + 90 = 126\). 126 marbles
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 8 and after
8 – Find the mistake [3 pts]
- \(4 \times 6 = 24\). 24 stickers
- “4 times as many” means multiply, but Ethan added 4. A multiplicative comparison needs multiplication.
- \(24 – 6 = 18\). 18 more stickers
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
9 – Bus and van [2 pts]
\(48 = n \times 6\). Divide: \(n = 48 \div 6 = 8\).
Check: \(8 \times 6 = 48\).
8 times as many
Scoring: 1 point for the equation. 1 point for 8.
Total score
20 points
Key facts behind this 4th grade multiplicative comparison test answer key
- “A is n times as many as B” means A = n × B.
- “More than” and “fewer than” are additive comparisons; “times as many” is multiplicative.
- To find the bigger amount, multiply. To find the smaller amount or the number of times, divide.
- Next, use a letter for the unknown, such as 28 = 4 × b.
- A bar model with equal units shows the comparison clearly.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade multiplicative comparison test answer key
- Students match the answer but not the equation. Instead, the key writes an equation for each problem, and the equation is part of the score.
- Students miss part of question 6. The second part asks how much more, so subtract Noah’s savings from his sister’s.
- Students skip the sentence in question 1. Also, both the sentence and the equation are worth a point each.
- Students forget the units in question 4. Instead, write feet after the length of the snake. Slow down at that step and check it twice.
How to learn from your test
- Sort your lost points into equations, comparison sentences, and word problems. Then practice the weakest of the three groups first.
- Rewrite a missed problem with new numbers. Finally, a new version shows whether you understand the idea or just the answer.
- Teachers can ask students to explain one correction to a partner, using a bar model. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.

4th grade multiplicative comparison test answer key: frequently asked questions
How many marbles does Diego have in question 7?
Liam has 5 times as many as Aisha’s 6 marbles, which is 30. Diego has 3 times as many as Liam, so Diego has 3 times 30, or 90 marbles. Each comparison is solved in order, using the result of the first in the second.
Why is the answer to question 9 eight?
A bus holds 48 students and a minivan holds 6. To find how many times as many, divide 48 by 6, which gives 8. The equation 48 equals n times 6 shows that n is 8. Checking, 8 times 6 is 48.
What does a complete answer to question 2 look like?
It has one sentence for each type of comparison. Sofia has 15 more stickers than Mei is additive, since 20 minus 5 is 15. Sofia has 4 times as many stickers as Mei is multiplicative, since 20 divided by 5 is 4.
