4th Grade Dividing with Remainders Quiz: 10 Questions with Answers
This 4th grade long division quiz covers dividing with remainders (Common Core 4.NBT.B.6), with a free PDF to print.
Key takeaway: This quiz helps fourth grade students quickly check how well they can divide with and without remainders and decide what the remainder means.
- Topic: Dividing with Remainders (4th grade)
- Content: 10 multiple-choice questions with instant explanations
- Standards: 4.NBT.B.6
- Answers: Explanations included
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This quiz helps fourth grade students quickly check how well they can divide with and without remainders and decide what the remainder means. Also, it has 10 multiple choice questions, and the wrong answers come from real mistakes, such as dropping a zero from the quotient.
The questions cover mental division, a two digit remainder, reading a dot picture, a zero in the quotient, checking with multiplication, an area model, and stories about photo pages, miles, and stickers. Then, one question asks which number cannot be a remainder for a given divisor. Also, plan about 10 minutes and read each explanation.

Question 6 and after
Remember
- Dividend ÷ divisor = quotient with a remainder; the remainder is less than the divisor.
- Partial quotients: divide easy parts of the dividend and add the results.
- An area model for division starts with the area (dividend) and one side (divisor).
- Then, check: quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend.
- Think about the story to decide what to do with a remainder.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade long division quiz
- Students drop a zero in a quotient such as 804 divided by 4. The tens place makes no group, so a zero must hold that place.
- Students ignore leftover items when everything must fit. Also, if 38 photos go on pages of 5, the leftover photos still need a page.
- Students pick a remainder equal to the divisor. Instead, a remainder must be less than the divisor, or another full group fits.
- Students divide before they multiply in a two stage story. Find the total number of items first, then share.
Tips to get a high score
- Estimate first. For 2,410 divided by 4, think 2,400 divided by 4 is 600, so any choice far from 600 is wrong.
- For word problems, circle the question to see whether it wants the quotient, the remainder, or the quotient plus one.
- Teachers can use the remainder question as a discussion starter on why remainders are always smaller than the divisor.

4th grade long division quiz: frequently asked questions
Which numbers can be remainders when dividing by 7?
Only 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 can be remainders when the divisor is 7. So, a remainder of 7 or more means another full group can still be made. Also, the remainder must always be smaller than the divisor.
How do you divide 180 by 6 in your head?
Think of 180 as 18 tens. Since 18 divided by 6 is 3, there are 3 tens, so the answer is 30. So, using place value and basic facts makes mental division quick for numbers that end in zero.
What score shows a student is ready to move on from division?
Eight or more out of 10 shows solid understanding of division with remainders. If a student misses the zero in the quotient or the rounding question, review those ideas and retake the quiz after a day of practice.
