4th Grade Factors, Multiples, Prime and Composite Test with Answer Key (Free PDF)
This 4th grade factors and multiples test covers factors, multiples, prime and composite (Common Core 4.OA.B.4), with a free PDF to print.
Key takeaway: This test helps fourth grade students show that they can find factor pairs and multiples, tell prime numbers from composite numbers, and use divisibility clues.
- Topic: Factors, Multiples, Prime and Composite (4th grade)
- Content: 9 questions with point values, about 45 minutes
- Standards: 4.OA.B.4
- Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This test helps fourth grade students show that they can find factor pairs and multiples, tell prime numbers from composite numbers, and use divisibility clues. Also, it is worth 20 points and takes 45 minutes.
The nine questions begin with factor pairs of a number, then ask for missing multiples on a number line and the factors from an array. Then, later questions test prime and composite numbers, multiples in a list, and a classmate’s claim about the number 1. Also, one question has three number riddles, one uses divisibility, and the last asks for every desk arrangement. Then, show your work for partial credit.

4th grade factors and multiples test: questions
1 – Factor pairs of 40 [2 pts]
First, write all the factor pairs of 40.
2 – Missing multiples [2 pts]
Next, the dots show multiples of 9. Write the two missing numbers.
3 – Array and factors [2 pts]
Then, the array shows tiles.
Write a multiplication equation for the array. Then list all the factors of the number of tiles.
4 – Prime or composite [2 pts]
Now, write prime or composite for each number: (a) 27 (b) 31 (c) 49 (d) 61.
5 – Multiples of 9 [2 pts]
Also, which of these numbers are multiples of 9: 63, 72, 85, 91, 99?
6 – Is 1 prime? [2 pts]
Mia says, “1 is a prime number.” Is Mia correct? Explain.
7 – Number riddles [3 pts]
- Find a multiple of 8 between 50 and 60. (1 point)
- Also, find a prime number between 80 and 90 whose digits add to 11. (1 point)
- Find an odd composite number between 10 and 20 that is a multiple of 5. (1 point)
8 – Divisibility [2 pts]
Without dividing, tell whether 3,845 is divisible by (a) 2 (b) 5 (c) 10.
9 – Desk arrangements [3 pts]
Now, a teacher has 32 desks. One arrangement is shown.
- List every arrangement that has at least 2 rows and at least 2 desks in each row. Write each as rows x desks. (2 points)
- Is 32 prime or composite? Explain. (1 point)
Key facts behind this 4th grade factors and multiples test
- A factor pair multiplies to make the number, such as 3 and 8 for 24.
- Also, a number has a limited list of factors but endless multiples.
- A prime number has exactly two factors; a composite number has more than two.
- Then, the number 1 is neither prime nor composite, and 2 is the only even prime.
- Last-digit patterns: 2 for even numbers, 5 for 0 or 5, 10 for 0.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade factors and multiples test
- Students list only some factor pairs. Instead, test each whole number from 1 upward, and stop when the pairs repeat.
- Students say a number with only one factor is prime. A prime needs exactly two factors, so check the count before you decide.
- Students call an odd square number prime. Check that a number like 25 equals 5 times 5, so it is composite.
- Students include an arrangement with one row when the question needs at least two rows and two items in each row.
Test-taking strategy
- Start with the questions where you can find factor pairs systematically. Finally, writing pairs in a column helps you avoid skipping any number.
- Use the last digit to test divisibility by 2, 5, and 10 before you do any division. It takes a second and prevents mistakes.
- Parents can review the night before by asking for the factors of one number and then quizzing a few primes.

4th grade factors and multiples test: frequently asked questions
Why is 1 not a prime number?
A prime number must have exactly two different factors, 1 and itself. The number 1 has only one factor, so it does not qualify. It is also not composite, so 1 is neither prime nor composite.
How do you find multiples of 9 in a list?
Skip count by 9 or divide each number by 9. Numbers such as 54 and 81 divide by 9 with no remainder, so they are multiples. A shortcut is that the digits of a multiple of 9 add up to 9 or 18.
How do you list all arrangements of a number of desks in rows?
Write each factor pair as rows by desks, then keep only those with both numbers at least 2. For 18 desks, the pairs 2 by 9 and 3 by 6 work, plus their turns. A single row does not meet the rule.
