This quiz helps fourth grade students quickly check how well they understand factors, multiples, prime numbers, and composite numbers. Also, it has 10 multiple choice questions, and the wrong answers come from common mistakes, such as listing an incomplete set of factors.

The questions cover factors, a prime number, multiples, factor pairs in an array, a pattern of multiples on a number line, divisibility by 2 and 5, and a true statement about primes. Then, the last question asks which number of pencils can fill boxes with none left over. Also, plan about 10 minutes and read every explanation.

Choose the best answer for each of the 10 questions on factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. Read the explanation after each question to learn from any mistake.

Remember

Remember
  • A factor pair multiplies to make the number, such as 3 and 8 for 24.
  • Also, a number has a limited list of factors but endless multiples.
  • A prime number has exactly two factors; a composite number has more than two.
  • Then, the number 1 is neither prime nor composite, and 2 is the only even prime.
  • Last-digit patterns: 2 for even numbers, 5 for 0 or 5, 10 for 0.

Common mistakes with this 4th grade factors and multiples quiz

  • Students list some factors but leave out the number itself. Every number is a factor of itself, so always include it.
  • Students pick a number because it is odd. Test it by dividing by small primes, since odd numbers can still be composite.
  • Students pick a number that ends in 5 when asked for divisibility by both 2 and 5. Also, it must end in 0.
  • Students choose a factor by counting tiles in the array. Instead, test each choice with division using the total number of tiles.

Tips to get a high score

  • Use the last digit to rule out choices quickly. Finally, a number that ends in 5 cannot be divisible by 2.
  • For multiples, skip count out loud. Hearing 7, 14, 21, 28 makes the pattern easier to spot in the choices.
  • Teachers can use a prime statement as a quick class debate about why one even number is special.

4th grade factors and multiples quiz: frequently asked questions

Why is every even number greater than 2 composite?

Every even number is divisible by 2, so any even number larger than 2 has at least three factors: 1, 2, and itself. The number 2 has just two factors, so it is the only even prime.

How many factor pairs does the number 24 have?

The number 24 has four factor pairs: 1 and 24, 2 and 12, 3 and 8, and 4 and 6. That gives eight factors. An array with 24 tiles can be arranged as four different rectangles, not counting turns.

How can you tell whether a number of items fills boxes exactly?

Check whether the number is a multiple of the box size, by skip counting or dividing. For boxes of 6, the number 48 is 8 times 6, so it fills 8 boxes. A number like 50 would leave 2 items over.
