- Topic: Multiplying a Fraction by a Whole Number (4th grade)
- Content: 20 worksheet problems, from easy to challenging
- Standards: 4.NF.B.4a, 4.NF.B.4b, 4.NF.B.4c
- Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This worksheet helps fourth grade students practice multiplying a fraction by a whole number, using unit fractions, pictures, number lines, and mixed numbers. Students see the same idea as repeated addition and as a product, so the rule feels natural.
There are 20 problems. The first five write fractions as multiples of unit fractions and find simple products, and the next five produce results greater than one and ask for mixed numbers. Also, four problems use a number line, a missing number, and different ways to write a fraction as a product. Then, the last six are word problems about milk, sugar, runs, ribbon, juice, and peaches. Also, allow about 30 minutes.

4th grade multiplying fractions by whole numbers worksheet: worksheet problems 1 to 10
1 – Three fourths
First, write \(\frac{3}{4}\) as a multiple of \(\frac{1}{4}\).
2 – Five sixths
Next, write \(\frac{5}{6}\) as a multiple of \(\frac{1}{6}\) and as a sum of unit fractions.
3 – Four fifths
Then, find \(4 \times \frac{1}{5}\).
4 – Three groups of two fifths
Now, find \(3 \times \frac{2}{5}\). Use the picture.
5 – Two groups of three eighths
Also, find \(2 \times \frac{3}{8}\).
6 – Five thirds
First, find \(5 \times \frac{1}{3}\). Write the answer as a mixed number.
7 – Four groups of three tenths
Next, find \(4 \times \frac{3}{10}\). Write the answer as a mixed number.
8 – A whole number answer
Then, find \(6 \times \frac{2}{3}\).
9 – Three groups of five sixths
Now, find \(3 \times \frac{5}{6}\). Write the answer as a mixed number.
10 – Seven groups of three fourths
Also, find \(7 \times \frac{3}{4}\). Write the answer as a mixed number.
Worksheet problems 11 and up
11 – Number line jumps
First, use the number line to find \(4 \times \frac{3}{8}\).
12 – Complete the product
Next, fill in the missing numbers: \(8 \times \frac{3}{12} = \frac{?}{12} = ?\).
13 – Two ways to write nine fourths
Then, write \(\frac{9}{4}\) as a product of a whole number and a fraction in two different ways.
14 – Nine groups of two fifths
Now, find \(9 \times \frac{2}{5}\). Write the answer as a mixed number.
15 – Glasses of milk
Maya drinks \(\frac{3}{4}\) cup of milk each day. How much milk does she drink in 5 days?
16 – Sugar for cookies
First, one batch of cookies needs \(\frac{2}{3}\) cup of sugar. How much sugar do 4 batches need?
17 – Training runs
Jamal runs \(\frac{3}{8}\) mile each day for 6 days. How far does he run in all?
18 – Ribbon for friends
Sofia gives each of her 4 friends a ribbon that is \(\frac{5}{6}\) yard long. How many yards of ribbon does she use?
Worksheet problem 19 and after
19 – Juice for glasses
Priya fills 6 glasses with \(\frac{3}{4}\) cup of juice each. She has 5 cups of juice. Does she have enough? How much is left, or how much more does she need?
20 – Peaches at the market
Also, a farmers market stand sells peaches in bags of \(\frac{3}{4}\) pound. Noah buys 7 bags and Mei buys 5 bags. How many pounds of peaches do they buy together?
Key facts behind this 4th grade multiplying fractions by whole numbers worksheet
- A fraction a/b is a multiple of the unit fraction 1/b, so a/b = a x 1/b.
- n x (a/b) = (n x a)/b. Multiply the whole number by the numerator and keep the denominator.
- Repeated jumps on a number line show the same product.
- Then, write improper fraction products as mixed numbers when it helps.
- Equal groups in word problems signal fraction times whole number.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade multiplying fractions by whole numbers worksheet
- Students multiply the whole number by both the numerator and the denominator. For 2 times three sevenths, the pieces stay sevenths, so keep the denominator.
- Students leave a product that is a whole number as a fraction. Also, if the numerator is a multiple of the denominator, divide to get a whole number.
- Students forget to compare a total with the amount available. When a story asks whether there is enough, find the total, then compare.
- Students find only one buyer’s amount when two people buy. Add the groups first or find each amount and add them.
Tips before you start the worksheet problems
- Write each product as repeated addition if it feels confusing. Then, three groups of two fifths is two fifths plus two fifths plus two fifths.
- Always check whether your answer is greater than one. If so, rename it as a mixed number when the problem asks for one.
- Teachers can ask students to draw a number line for one problem and compare their jumps with a partner.

4th grade multiplying fractions by whole numbers worksheet: frequently asked questions
How do you write a fraction greater than one as a product?
Write it as a whole number times a unit fraction. So, seven thirds is 7 times one third. You can also pick another factor pair, such as a number times a larger fraction, as long as the product matches.
How do you solve a word problem with a fraction of a cup each day?
Multiply the number of days by the amount per day. Four times two thirds is eight thirds, which equals 2 and 2 thirds cups. Rename the answer as a mixed number so it is easy to measure.
How can you check that a product is reasonable?
Compare it with benchmarks. For 7 times three fifths, three fifths is a little more than one half, so the product should be a little more than half of 7. An answer near 4 fits.
