This answer key helps fourth grade students see how each point on the decimal test was earned. Also, it gives full solutions to all nine questions, with place value reasoning and equivalent fractions shown, plus the three parts of the school store problem.
Question 6 explains why 0.3 and 0.30 are equal, question 7 shows how to order a list with two decimal places, and question 9 models a complete written explanation. Add your points out of 20, then spend about 15 minutes redoing every question that lost credit. Then, try writing each corrected answer in both fraction and decimal form.

4th grade decimals test answer key: worked solutions
1 – Grid fractions [2 pts]
3 full columns is 30 squares and 8 more squares: 38 squares.
\(\frac{38}{100} = 0.38\)
Scoring: 1 point for the fraction; 1 point for the decimal.
2 – Fractions to decimals [2 pts]
(a) 9 tenths is 0.9. (b) 56 hundredths is 0.56.
(a) 0.9 (b) 0.56
Also, Scoring: 1 point for each part.
3 – Hundredths fractions [2 pts]
(a) 0.7 = \(\frac{7}{10}\) = \(\frac{70}{100}\). (b) \(\frac{3}{10} = \frac{30}{100}\).
(a) \(\frac{70}{100}\) (b) \(\frac{30}{100}\)
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
4 – Add tenths and hundredths [2 pts]
\(\frac{6}{10} = \frac{60}{100}\).
\(\frac{60}{100} + \frac{25}{100} = \frac{85}{100}\).
\(\frac{85}{100} = 0.85\)
Scoring: 1 point for rewriting the tenths as hundredths; 1 point for the sum.
5 – Zoomed number line [2 pts]
(a) P is 4 small marks after 0.5, so 0.54.
(b) 0.54 is greater than 0.50.
(a) 0.54 (b) \(0.54 > 0.5\)
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
6 – Compare decimals [2 pts]
(a) 0.3 = 0.30. (b) 0.1 = 0.10, and 9 hundredths is less than 10 hundredths.
(a) \(0.3 = 0.30\) (b) \(0.09 < 0.1\)
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 7 and after
7 – Order and expand [3 pts]
(a) In hundredths: 0.80, 0.08, 0.88, 0.70. Order: 0.08, 0.70, 0.80, 0.88.
(b) 0.88 is 8 tenths and 8 hundredths.
(a) 0.08, 0.7, 0.8, 0.88 (b) \(\frac{8}{10} + \frac{8}{100}\)
Scoring: (a) 2 points for the correct order, 1 point if two decimals are swapped; (b) 1 point.
8 – School store [3 pts]
(a) $0.35 is \(\frac{35}{100}\) of a dollar.
(b) \(\frac{35}{100} + \frac{40}{100} = \frac{75}{100}\), which is $0.75.
(c) \(1.00 – 0.75 = 0.25\).
(a) \(\frac{35}{100}\) (b) $0.75 (c) $0.25
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
9 – Liam's claim [2 pts]
Write 0.4 as 0.40. Then compare 40 hundredths and 38 hundredths: 40 is greater.
Liam is not correct. \(0.4 > 0.38\)
Scoring: 1 point for saying he is not correct; 1 point for an explanation that uses the same place value.
Total score
20 points
Key facts behind this 4th grade decimals test answer key
- One tenth = 10 hundredths, so 3/10 = 30/100.
- Next, the first digit after the decimal point is tenths and the second is hundredths.
- To add tenths and hundredths, rewrite the tenths as hundredths first: 3/10 + 4/100 = 34/100 = 0.34.
- Then, compare decimals by writing them to the same place: 0.4 = 0.40, which is greater than 0.38.
- Money is hundredths of a dollar: a dime is $0.10 and a penny is $0.01.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade decimals test answer key
- Students see equal in question 6 and think it is a trick. Instead, the key shows that three tenths and thirty hundredths are two names for the same amount.
- Students answer only the price in question 8. Also, the three parts ask for a fraction, a total, and change, and each earns its own point.
- Students order the list in question 7 by looking at digits only. Instead, compare using two decimal places as the key does.
- Students copy the explanation in question 9 without understanding it. Also, say aloud why a zero can be added to the end of a decimal.
How to learn from your test
- Rewrite each of your missed answers in expanded form. Writing 0.34 as 3 tenths and 4 hundredths shows which place was misplaced.
- Practice with money to check decimal arithmetic. Adding 0.65 and 0.30 should feel like adding 65 cents and 30 cents.
- Teachers can ask students to circle the first step where their work differed from the key, which makes corrections faster.

4th grade decimals test answer key: frequently asked questions
Why is 0.09 less than 0.1?
Nine hundredths is less than ten hundredths. Writing 0.1 as 0.10 makes the comparison clear, since 9 is less than 10. The 9 looks big, but it sits in the hundredths place, so it is worth less than the 1 in the tenths place.
How do you add six tenths and twenty-five hundredths?
Rewrite six tenths as sixty hundredths, then add: 60 plus 25 is 85. The sum is 85 over 100, or 0.85. Matching the denominators first is the key step, and it is the same idea used for adding fractions with unlike denominators later.
What if I wrote the right decimal but the wrong fraction?
You may get partial credit, but check the fraction. The decimal 0.7 equals 7 over 10 and also 70 over 100. If the question asks for a denominator of 100, the answer must show 70 over 100, not 7 over 10.
