Question 7 and after
Remember
- One tenth = 10 hundredths, so 3/10 = 30/100.
- Next, the first digit after the decimal point is tenths and the second is hundredths.
- To add tenths and hundredths, rewrite the tenths as hundredths first: 3/10 + 4/100 = 34/100 = 0.34.
- Then, compare decimals by writing them to the same place: 0.4 = 0.40, which is greater than 0.38.
- Money is hundredths of a dollar: a dime is $0.10 and a penny is $0.01.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade decimals quiz
- Students pick 3 over 100 for three tenths. Also, multiply both parts of 3 over 10 by 10 to get 30 over 100.
- Students add the tops of a tenths plus hundredths sum without converting. Rewrite the tenths as hundredths, then add.
- Students choose the shorter decimal as greater. Instead, write 0.6 as 0.60 and compare with 0.58.
- Students name the digit 8 in 2.48 as eight tenths. It is in the second place after the decimal point, so it is eight hundredths.
Tips to get a high score
- Write each decimal with two places before you choose an answer. Finally, this habit removes most place value confusion.
- For money questions, think in cents. Also, the decimal 0.34 is the same as 34 cents, which makes totals easy to check.
- Teachers can use this quiz as an exit ticket and sort students by which place value mistake they made.

4th grade decimals quiz: frequently asked questions
How do you find the value of a digit in a decimal?
Name the place where the digit sits, then say its value. So, in 6.47, the 4 is in the tenths place and is worth four tenths, and the 7 is in the hundredths place and is worth seven hundredths.
How can you tell which of several decimals is greatest?
Write them all with the same number of places and compare from the left. Also, among 0.7, 0.07, and 0.67, rewrite as 0.70, 0.07, and 0.67. The first has the most tenths, so 0.7 is greatest.
How do you count money shown as dimes and pennies?
Each dime is one tenth of a dollar, or 0.10, and each penny is one hundredth, or 0.01. Two dimes and five pennies make 0.20 plus 0.05, which is 0.25 dollars, or 25 cents.
