4th Grade Line Plots with Fractions Worksheet (PDF)

4th Grade math worksheet: Line Plots with Fractions – Maths PDF

These 20 problems practice reading and making line plots with halves, fourths, and eighths. They match Common Core 4.MD.B.4. You will count dots, find the longest and shortest values, and add and subtract fractions from a plot.

The last six problems are word problems about rain, apples, seedlings, long jumps, sugar, and rope. Many problems use a picture of the plot.

Grade 4 · Common Core State Standards: 4.MD.B.4

Exercise 1 – Count the dots

Use the line plot. Maya measured caterpillars in the garden. How many caterpillars did she measure?

1/41/23/41length in inches
Caterpillar lengths. Each dot is one caterpillar.

Exercise 2 – Most common length

Use the line plot in Problem 1. Which length did the most caterpillars have?

Exercise 3 – Longest and shortest

Use the line plot in Problem 1. Find the longest and the shortest length, and how much longer the longest is.

Exercise 4 – Make a line plot

Jamal measured water in 8 cups, in cups: \(\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{3}{4}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{3}{4}\). Make a line plot with the marks \(\frac{1}{4}\), \(\frac{1}{2}\), and \(\frac{3}{4}\).

Exercise 5 – Longer than half

Use the line plot in Problem 1. How many caterpillars are longer than \(\frac{1}{2}\) inch?

Exercise 6 – Add two lengths

Use the line plot in Problem 1. Add the length of the longest caterpillar and the shortest caterpillar.

Exercise 7 – Eighths of an inch

Use the line plot. How many beads are longer than \(\frac{1}{4}\) inch?

1/81/43/81/2length in inches
Bead lengths. Each dot is one bead.

Exercise 8 – One column total

Use the line plot in Problem 7. Find the total length of the beads that are \(\frac{1}{4}\) inch long.

Exercise 9 – Difference in eighths

Use the line plot in Problem 7. How much longer is the longest bead than the shortest bead?

Exercise 10 – Plant heights

Use the line plot. How many bean plants are at least 1 foot tall?

1/211 1/22height in feet
Bean plant heights. Each dot is one plant.

Exercise 11 – Tallest column total

Use the line plot in Problem 10. Find the total height of the plants that are \(1\frac{1}{2}\) feet tall.

Exercise 12 – Compare two columns

Use the line plot in Problem 10. The 1-foot plants have a total height. The \(\frac{1}{2}\)-foot plants have a total height. Find how much greater the first total is.

Exercise 13 – Plot from a list

Mei measured 8 leaves in inches: \(\frac{1}{8}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{3}{8}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{8}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{3}{8}\). Make a line plot with eighths. Then tell how many leaves are longer than \(\frac{1}{4}\) inch.

Exercise 14 – Total of all caterpillars

Use the line plot in Problem 1. Find the total length of all 10 caterpillars if they were lined up end to end.

Exercise 15 – Rainfall

Jamal recorded rain for 8 days in inches. How much rain fell in all?

01/41/23/41rain in inches
Daily rainfall. Each dot is one day.

Exercise 16 – Apple bags

Sofia weighed 9 bags of apples. Find the total weight, then how much heavier the heaviest bag is than the lightest.

1/211 1/22weight in pounds
Apple bags. Each dot is one bag.

Exercise 17 – Seedlings

Priya measured 7 seedlings in inches. How much taller is the tallest seedling than the shortest, and how many seedlings are taller than \(\frac{3}{8}\) inch?

1/43/81/25/8height in inches
Seedling heights.

Exercise 18 – Long jump

Eight students in Little League camp did a standing long jump. Find the total of all the jumps, and how much farther the longest jump is than the shortest.

33 1/244 1/2distance in feet
Long jumps. Each dot is one student.

Exercise 19 – Sugar scoops

Aisha measured sugar for a bake sale. She used 8 scoops of the sizes shown (in cups). She needs 5 cups in all. How many cups does she still need after using all 8 scoops?

1/41/23/4scoop size in cups
Sugar scoops. Each dot is one scoop.

Exercise 20 – Rope pieces

Noah cut 10 pieces of rope for a school play. He needs \(10\text{ ft}\) of rope in all. How much more rope does he need after counting the pieces below?

1/23/411 1/4length in feet
Rope pieces. Each dot is one piece.
