Length practice solutions: exercises 1 to 10

Exercise 1 – Pick the unit

A crayon is short. A foot is much too long for it. Inches.

Exercise 2 – Pick the tool

The bookshelf is taller than a 6-inch ruler, and a short ruler would need many moves. A yardstick is 3 feet long. A yardstick.

Exercise 3 – Read the ruler

The chalk starts at 0 and ends at 4. 4 inches.

Exercise 4 – Centimeter ribbon

The ribbon starts at 0 and ends at 13. 13 centimeters.

Exercise 5 – Not at zero

The leaf starts at 2 and ends at 7. Count the spaces: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 is 5 spaces. Or subtract: \(7 – 2 = 5\). 5 inches.

5 in01234567in
The leaf covers 5 spaces.

Exercise 6 – Estimate a row

Add 3 four times: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\). About 12 inches.

Exercise 7 – Smaller unit

An inch is a smaller unit than a foot, so more inches are needed to cover the rug. Greater than 6.

Exercise 8 – Pencil and crayon

The pencil is 7 inches. The crayon is 3 inches. \(7 – 3 = 4\). 4 inches longer.

Exercise 9 – Two ropes

\(15 – 8 = 7\). 7 feet longer.

Exercise 10 – Which is longer

The ribbon is 17 cm and the string is 11 cm. \(17 – 11 = 6\). 6 centimeters.

Exercises 11 and up

Exercise 11 – Bug jumps

The jumps are 5 and 7. \(5 + 7 = 12\). 12 inches.

02468101214161820+ 5+ 712
The jumps land on 12.

Exercise 12 – Sidewalk

\(23 + 14 = 37\). 37 feet.

Exercise 13 – Cut a board

\(45 – 18 = 27\). Check: \(27 + 18 = 45\). 27 inches.

Exercise 14 – Three pieces of yarn

\(12 + 25 = 37\), then \(37 + 19 = 56\). 56 centimeters.

Exercise 15 – Ribbon cut back

Start at 30. Jump back 10 to land on 20. Jump back 3 to land on 17. \(30 – 13 = 17\). 17 inches.

051015202530– 10– 317
The last landing spot is 17.

Exercise 16 – Order lengths

Compare the tens first: 29 has 2 tens, 34 has 3 tens, 41 has 4 tens. 29, 34, 41.

Exercise 17 – Long jump

Diego and Mei together: \(38 + 27 = 65\). Then \(80 – 65 = 15\). 15 inches.

Exercise 18 – How much was cut

\(64 – 39 = 25\). Check: \(39 + 25 = 64\). 25 centimeters.

Exercise 19 – Trail model

Subtract the known part: \(56 – 28 = 28\). 28 meters.

56 m28 m28 m
The missing part is 28 m.

Exercise 20 – Rope for the park

Rope used: \(35 + 28 = 63\). Rope left: \(90 – 63 = 27\). 27 feet.

Key facts behind this length practice solutions

Key facts
  • Start at the 0 mark, keep the object straight, and read the number at the other end.
  • A smaller unit gives a larger number: the same strip is 2 feet or 24 inches.
  • Always write the unit, such as 5 in, 12 cm, or 21 ft.
  • Subtract two lengths to find how much longer one object is.
  • On a number line diagram, a jump right adds and a jump left subtracts.

How to use this length practice solutions

Cover each solution, solve the exercise again, then uncover it and compare every line. If your answer differs, find the first step that changed and redo the exercise from there.
