2nd Grade Picture Graphs, Bar Graphs and Line Plots Test Solutions and Scoring (PDF)
This grade 2 data test answers for 2nd Grade covers picture graphs, bar graphs and line plots (Common Core 2.MD.D.9, 2.MD.D.10), with a free PDF to print.
Use this key to score the test out of 20 points. Each answer shows the numbers read from the graph and a scoring guide. Give partial credit when the method is right but a small slip happens at the end.

Grade 2 data test answers: worked solutions
Question 1 – Measure the strip [2 pts]
- The strip ends at 6. 6 inches
- \(6 + 2 = 8\). 8 inches
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 2 – Read the line plot [3 pts]
- Four X marks above 4. 4 sticks
- \(1 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 11\). 11 sticks
- Sticks of 2 and 3 inches: \(1 + 3 = 4\). 4 sticks
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 3 – Make a line plot [2 pts]
Check: \(2 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 8\).
Scoring: 1 point for the correct number line, 1 point for the correct X marks.
Question 4 – Books read [3 pts]
- Room 3 has the longest row. Room 3
- \(9 – 5 = 4\). 4 books
- \(7 + 6 = 13\). 13 books
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 5 – Bake sale bars [3 pts]
- The shortest bar is Muffins. Muffins
- \(9 + 7 = 16\). 16 items
- \(9 – 6 = 3\). 3 fewer
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 6 – Draw a bar graph [2 pts]
Scoring: 1 point for the bars of Red and Blue at the right height, 1 point for the bars of Green and Yellow at the right height.
Question 7 – Compare in the graph [2 pts]
Muffins and pretzels: \(4 + 7 = 11\). Cookies: 9.
\(11 – 9 = 2\)
Muffins and pretzels, by 2 more
Scoring: 1 point for the sum 11, 1 point for the comparison and the difference.
Question 8 – Stick word problem [3 pts]
- \(14 – 3 – 6 = 5\). 5 sticks
- \(3 + 6 = 9\). 9 sticks
- \(6 – 3 = 3\). 3 more sticks
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Total score

Key facts behind this grade 2 data test answers
- Measure to the nearest whole inch, starting at the 0 mark of the ruler.
- On a line plot, each X is one object.
- Read the key of a picture graph before you count.
- A bar graph uses the scale on the side to give the number for each bar.
- Put together by adding. Compare by subtracting.
