Grade 3 equivalent fractions test answers: worked solutions
Question 1 – Equal amounts on bars [2 pts]
- Four of the eight parts are shaded.
- \(\frac{1}{2}\) = \(\frac{4}{8}\)
Scoring: 1 point for shading exactly 4 eighths. 1 point for the missing numerator 4.
Question 2 – Same point on number lines [3 pts]
- The mark is at the sixth eighths tick.
- \(\frac{6}{8}\)
- \(\frac{4}{8}\)
Scoring: 1 point per part. In (a) the mark must line up with the dashed line.
Question 3 – Whole numbers as fractions [3 pts]
- 7
- \(\frac{6}{3}\)
- 1
Scoring: 1 point per part. In (b), 2 wholes of 3 thirds each is 6 thirds.
Question 4 – Same denominator [2 pts]
- \(\frac{5}{8} < \frac{7}{8}\)
- \(\frac{4}{6} > \frac{2}{6}\)
Scoring: 1 point per correct symbol.
Question 5 – Same numerator [3 pts]
- The top bar: \(\frac{2}{3}\); bottom bar: \(\frac{2}{6}\).
- \(\frac{2}{3} > \frac{2}{6}\)
- Thirds are bigger parts because the whole is cut into fewer pieces.
Scoring: 1 point for both fractions correct, 1 point for the comparison, 1 point for a reason about part size.
Question 6 – Circle the equal fraction [1 pt]
Each fourth is 2 eighths, so 3 fourths are 6 eighths.
Answer: \(\frac{6}{8}\)
Scoring: 1 point for circling only \(\frac{6}{8}\).
Question 7 – Bike rides [2 pts]
- Priya. Sixths are bigger than eighths.
- \(\frac{5}{6} > \frac{5}{8}\)
Scoring: 1 point per part.
Question 8 – Find the mistake [2 pts]
When the numerators match, the bigger denominator means smaller parts. Sixths are smaller than thirds.
Correct: \(\frac{2}{6} < \frac{2}{3}\)
Scoring: 1 point for a correct explanation about part size, 1 point for the correct symbol.
Question 9 – Ribbon lengths [2 pts]
- Ten halves: \(\frac{10}{2}\) = 5 feet.
- Six thirds: \(\frac{6}{3}\) = 2 feet.
Scoring: 1 point per part. Give the point if the fraction is shown and the whole number is correct.

Key facts behind this grade 3 equivalent fractions test answers
- Equivalent fractions name the same amount and sit at the same point on a number line.
- Examples with denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 and 2/3 = 4/6.
- A fraction with the same top and bottom number equals 1, and n/1 equals n.
- Same denominator: the greater numerator makes the greater fraction.
- Same numerator: the smaller denominator makes the greater fraction.
