4th Grade Lines, Rays and Classifying Shapes Test Solutions and Scoring (PDF)

4th Grade math test solutions: Lines, Rays and Classifying Shapes – Maths PDF

Use this answer key to score the test out of 20 points. Each solution explains the reasoning with the correct geometry words, and the scoring note tells how to give the points, including for drawings.

Grade 4 · Common Core State Standards: 4.G.A.1, 4.G.A.2

Question 1 – Name the figure [2 pts]

  1. It starts at A, has one endpoint, and goes through B: ray AB
  2. It has two endpoints: segment CD

Scoring: 1 point for each correct name. Accept “line segment CD” and “ray AB”.

Question 2 – Draw lines [2 pts]

Two examples are shown.

Parallel and perpendicular lines.

Scoring: part a, 1 point for two lines that never meet and stay the same distance apart. Part b, 1 point for two lines crossing at 90° with the right angle marked or clearly square.

Question 3 – Name the angles [2 pts]

  1. Angle P is smaller than a square corner: acute
  2. Angle Q is wider than a square corner but not a straight line: obtuse

Scoring: 1 point for each correct classification.

Question 4 – Classify triangles [2 pts]

  1. It has a 90° angle: right triangle
  2. 130° is more than 90°: obtuse triangle

Scoring: 1 point for each correct classification.

Question 5 – Study a quadrilateral [3 pts]

  1. 2 pairs (both pairs of opposite sides have arrows)
  2. 0 right angles (no little squares)
  3. Parallelogram

Scoring: 1 point for each correct part.

Question 6 – Sort the shapes [3 pts]

Rectangle: (a) 2, (b) 4. Trapezoid: (c) 1, (d) 0. Right triangle: (e) 0, (f) 1.

(a) 2 (b) 4 (c) 1 (d) 0 (e) 0 (f) 1

Scoring: 1 point for each row if both answers are correct.

Question 7 – Read the map [3 pts]

  1. Main St and Oak St
  2. 1st Ave and Main St (or 1st Ave and Oak St)
  3. 60° is less than 90°: acute
Main StOak St1st AvePine St
City map.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct part.

Question 8 – Always, sometimes, never [3 pts]

  1. always: every rectangle has 4 right angles.
  2. never: two right angles leave no room to close a triangle.
  3. sometimes: a rectangle does, but a kite-shaped quadrilateral does not.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct word.
