Use this answer key to check each problem on the decimals worksheet. Every solution shows how tenths change to hundredths and how decimals are compared, so mistakes are easy to find.

Grade 4 · Common Core State Standards: 4.NF.C.5, 4.NF.C.6, 4.NF.C.7

Decimals practice solutions: exercises 1 to 10

Exercise 1 – Tenth as a decimal

Tenths are the first place after the decimal point.

Answer: 0.3.

Exercise 2 – Dimes as hundredths

Each dime is \(\frac{1}{10}\) of a dollar, so 9 dimes is \(\frac{9}{10}\).

Multiply the top and bottom by 10: \(\frac{9 \times 10}{10 \times 10} = \frac{90}{100}\), which is 90 cents.

Answer: \(\frac{9}{10} = \frac{90}{100}\) of a dollar.

Exercise 3 – Shaded columns

6 of the 10 columns are shaded: \(\frac{6}{10}\). Each column has 10 squares, so 60 of 100 squares are shaded: \(\frac{60}{100}\).

6 tenths = 60 hundredths.

Answer: \(\frac{6}{10} = \frac{60}{100} = 0.6\).

Exercise 4 – Hundredths as a decimal

47 hundredths is 4 tenths and 7 hundredths.

Answer: 0.47.

Exercise 5 – Decimal as a fraction

0.08 is 8 hundredths.

Answer: \(\frac{8}{100}\).

Exercise 6 – Half as hundredths

0.5 is 5 tenths: \(\frac{5}{10}\). Multiply by 10 on the top and bottom: \(\frac{5}{10} = \frac{50}{100}\).

Answer: \(\frac{5}{10}\) = \(\frac{50}{100}\).

Exercise 7 – Tenths plus hundredths

\(\frac{3}{10} = \frac{30}{100}\).

\(\frac{30}{100} + \frac{4}{100} = \frac{34}{100}\).

30 + 4 = 34 squares.

Answer: \(\frac{34}{100} = 0.34\).

Exercise 8 – Adding two fractions

\(\frac{2}{10} = \frac{20}{100}\).

\(\frac{20}{100} + \frac{35}{100} = \frac{55}{100}\).

Answer: 0.55.

Exercise 9 – Point on a number line

The line has 10 equal parts. The point is at the 6th mark, so 6 tenths.

00.10.20.30.40.50.60.70.80.910.6
The point is at 0.6.

Answer: 0.6.

Exercise 10 – Place value

The first digit after the decimal point is tenths and the second is hundredths.

Answer: 7 is in the tenths place; 5 is in the hundredths place.

Exercises 11 and up

Exercise 11 – Compare 0.4 and 0.38

Write 0.4 as 0.40. Compare 40 hundredths with 38 hundredths.

Answer: \(0.4 > 0.38\).

Exercise 12 – Compare 0.57 and 0.6

Write 0.6 as 0.60. Compare 57 hundredths with 60 hundredths.

Answer: \(0.57 < 0.6\).

Exercise 13 – Order decimals

In hundredths: 0.50, 0.05, 0.55, 0.45. Order: 0.05, 0.45, 0.50, 0.55.

Answer: 0.05, 0.45, 0.5, 0.55.

Exercise 14 – Zoomed number line

The point is 7 small marks after 0.3. That is 7 hundredths more than 0.3.

0.30.40.37
The point is at 0.37.

Answer: 0.37.

Exercise 15 – Dimes and pennies

3 dimes is \(\frac{3}{10}\) of a dollar and 4 pennies is \(\frac{4}{100}\) of a dollar.

\(\frac{30}{100} + \frac{4}{100} = \frac{34}{100}\).

Answer: \(\frac{34}{100}\) of a dollar, or $0.34.

Exercise 16 – Rainy days

Write 0.6 as 0.60. Compare 60 hundredths with 45 hundredths.

Answer: Monday had more rain.

Exercise 17 – Garden plan

\(\frac{4}{10} = \frac{40}{100}\).

\(\frac{40}{100} + \frac{5}{100} = \frac{45}{100}\).

Tomatoes (blue) and peppers (orange).

Answer: \(\frac{45}{100} = 0.45\).

Exercise 18 – Notebook prices

$2.40 is 2 dollars and 40 hundredths. $2.04 is 2 dollars and 4 hundredths.

Compare 4 hundredths and 40 hundredths.

Answer: The $2.04 notebook costs less.

Exercise 19 – Long jump

4.2 = 4.20.

Compare 4.20 and 4.19: the ones are the same, 2 tenths is greater than 1 tenth.

Answer: 4.20; Mei jumped farther.

Exercise 20 – School store change

Spent: \(\frac{25}{100} + \frac{40}{100} = \frac{65}{100}\), which is $0.65.

Change: \(\frac{70}{100} – \frac{65}{100} = \frac{5}{100}\), which is $0.05.

Answer: $0.65 spent; $0.05 change.

Key facts behind this decimals practice solutions

Key facts
  • One tenth = 10 hundredths, so 3/10 = 30/100.
  • The first digit after the decimal point is tenths and the second is hundredths.
  • To add tenths and hundredths, rewrite the tenths as hundredths first: 3/10 + 4/100 = 34/100 = 0.34.
  • Compare decimals by writing them to the same place: 0.4 = 0.40, which is greater than 0.38.
  • Money is hundredths of a dollar: a dime is $0.10 and a penny is $0.01.
