Grade 4 · Common Core State Standards: 4.NBT.A.1, 4.NBT.A.2

Grade 4 place value answers: exercises 1 to 10

Exercise 1 – Value of a digit

Name the places from the left: 3 ten thousands, 9 thousands, 4 hundreds, 5 tens, 0 ones.

The 9 is in the thousands place, so its value is \(9 \times 1{,}000 = 9{,}000\).

9,000

Exercise 2 – Name the place

Count places from the right: 9 ones, 1 tens, 4 hundreds, 3 thousands, 7 ten thousands.

The 7 is in the ten thousands place.

Exercise 3 – Value in a big number

Thousandshundreds4tens6ones2Oneshundreds1tens5ones9
The 6 is in the ten thousands column.

The chart shows 6 in the ten thousands column.

\(6 \times 10{,}000 = 60{,}000\)

60,000

Exercise 4 – Ten times as much

Multiply by 10: \(400 \times 10 = 4{,}000\).

Check: the 4 moves one place to the left, from hundreds to thousands.

4,000

Exercise 5 – Compare two sevens

707070070707070707070707070
Ten bars of 70 make 700.

The diagram shows ten bars of 70 in 700.

\(700 \div 70 = 10\)

10 times as much

Exercise 6 – Two sixes in a row

First 6: \(600{,}000\). Second 6: \(60{,}000\).

\(600{,}000 \div 60{,}000 = 10\)

10 times as much

Exercise 7 – Expanded form

6 thousands, 2 hundreds, 0 tens, 5 ones.

\(6{,}000 + 200 + 5\)

\(6{,}000 + 200 + 5\)

Exercise 8 – Standard form from expanded

4 ten thousands, 3 thousands, 6 hundreds, 0 tens, 8 ones.

\(43,608\)

Exercise 9 – Word form

Read each period. 52 thousand, then 14.

fifty-two thousand, fourteen

Exercise 10 – Standard form from words

306 thousand and 40. The hundreds place has no value, so it is 0, and the ones place is 0.

\(306{,}000 + 40 = 306{,}040\)

\(306,040\)

Exercises 11 and up

Exercise 11 – Compare thousands

Thousands and hundreds match (4 and 5). In the tens place, 0 is less than 9.

\(4{,}509 < 4{,}590\)

Exercise 12 – Compare six-digit numbers

The digits match through the hundreds place (1, 2, 0, 3). In the tens place, 6 is greater than 4.

\(120{,}364 > 120{,}346\)

Exercise 13 – Order from least to greatest

The ten thousands digits are 5, 5, and 5, so compare the thousands: 6, 6, and 8. Therefore \(58,062\) is greatest.

For \(56,820\) and \(56,082\), the hundreds are 8 and 0, so \(56,082\) is less.

\(56,082\), \(56,820\), \(58,062\)

Exercise 14 – Read the chart

The chart reads 2, 0, 8, 4, 1, 5 from left to right: \(208,415\).

The highlighted 4 is in the hundreds column, so its value is \(4 \times 100 = 400\).

\(208,415\); 400

Exercise 15 – Stadium crowd

\(12,486\): 1 ten thousand, 2 thousands, 4 hundreds, 8 tens, 6 ones.

The 2 is worth \(2 \times 1{,}000 = 2{,}000\).

Word form: twelve thousand, four hundred eighty-six.

2,000; twelve thousand, four hundred eighty-six

Exercise 16 – Mystery number

Standard form: 8, 3, 0, 7, 2 gives \(83,072\).

Expanded form: \(80{,}000 + 3{,}000 + 70 + 2\) (the hundreds place is 0, so there is no hundreds term).

\(83,072\) = \(80{,}000 + 3{,}000 + 70 + 2\)

Exercise 17 – City populations

Oak Hill starts 89, so it is least. The other three start 98.

Compare the hundreds: Maple Grove has 4, Cedar Falls has 0, Pine Bluff has 5. Greatest first: Pine Bluff (5), Maple Grove (4), Cedar Falls (0).

Pine Bluff \(98,504\), Maple Grove \(98,450\), Cedar Falls \(98,054\), Oak Hill \(89,540\)

Exercise 18 – Odometer rolls over

99,99099,99299,99499,99699,998100,00099,999100,000
One more mile moves the odometer to 100,000.

\(99{,}999 + 1 = 100{,}000\).

The 1 is in the hundred thousands place, so its value is \(100,000\).

Check: \(100,000\) is ten times \(10,000\).

100,000; 100,000

Exercise 19 – Who is right?

Count places in \(350,260\): 3 hundred thousands, 5 ten thousands, 0 thousands, 2 hundreds, 6 tens, 0 ones.

The 5 is worth \(5 \times 10{,}000 = 50{,}000\), so Noah is correct and Mei is not. Mei used the thousands place by mistake.

Noah is correct; the 5 is worth 50,000.

Exercise 20 – Stickers by ten

Carton: \(4{,}000 \times 10 = 40{,}000\).

Pallet: \(40{,}000 \times 10 = 400{,}000\).

Word form: four hundred thousand.

400,000; four hundred thousand
