Key takeaway: This worksheet helps fourth grade students practice place value, expanded form, word form, comparing, and ordering with numbers up to one million.
- Topic: Place Value to One Million (4th grade)
- Content: 20 worksheet problems, from easy to challenging
- Standards: 4.NBT.A.1, 4.NBT.A.2
- Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This worksheet helps fourth grade students practice place value, expanded form, word form, comparing, and ordering with numbers up to one million. Also, charts, number lines, and real situations show how large numbers appear in life, such as crowds and odometers.
There are 20 problems. The first six find the value of digits and compare how much more a digit is worth in one place than another. Then, four problems convert among standard, expanded, and word forms, and four more compare and order numbers and read a chart. Also, the last six are real situations with crowds, a mystery number, city populations, an odometer, and stickers. Then, allow about 30 minutes.

Key facts behind this 4th grade place value worksheet
- A digit in any place is worth 10 times the same digit one place to its right.
- Places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions.
- Expanded form adds the value of each digit: 4,203 = 4,000 + 200 + 3.
- Then, compare numbers from the left, place by place, and use the symbols <, >, or =.
- 1,000,000 is ten times as much as 100,000.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade place value worksheet
- Students read a digit by its face value. In 6,500, the 5 is worth five hundred, not five, because of the place it sits in.
- Students order numbers by the first digit only. Compare each place from the left until the digits differ.
- Students drop a zero when writing a number from words. Fill every empty place with a zero, so seventy thousand, nine becomes 70,009.
- Students agree that a digit is worth the wrong amount because they miscount places. Name the place, then say its value.
Tips before you start the worksheet problems
- Draw a place value chart for problems that give a spoken number. Writing digits in the chart prevents lost zeros.
- For expanded form, write each nonzero digit with its value and skip the zeros. Then add the values mentally to check.
- Teachers can ask students to share how they ordered a list of towns and what digit decided each comparison.

4th grade place value worksheet: frequently asked questions
How do you write a number in expanded form?
Write the value of each digit as a sum. For 4,305, write 4,000 plus 300 plus 5. Skip any digit that is zero, since it adds nothing. Expanded form shows why the digits are in their places.
How many times as much is a digit worth than the same digit one place to its right?
It is worth 10 times as much. The 3 in 300 is worth 10 times the 3 in 30. Two places over, the value is 100 times as much, so the 3 in 300 is worth 100 times the 3 in 3.
How do you order several numbers from least to greatest?
Compare the numbers by place from the left, finding the smallest first. For 41,230, 41,023, and 42,013, the first two digits match in two numbers, and then 0 is less than 2, so 41,023 comes first.
