4th Grade Rounding Whole Numbers Worksheet (PDF)

These 20 problems practice rounding whole numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand (Common Core 4.NBT.A.3). You will use number lines, handle numbers that are halfway, and round digits that carry, such as 9,960. The last six problems use rounding to estimate sums and differences in real situations.
Grade 4 · Common Core State Standards: 4.NBT.A.3
Exercise 1 – Nearest ten
Round \(683\) to the nearest ten.
Exercise 2 – Nearest hundred
Round \(4,251\) to the nearest hundred.
Exercise 3 – Nearest thousand
Round \(38,745\) to the nearest thousand.
Exercise 4 – Halfway number
Round \(2,500\) to the nearest thousand.
Exercise 5 – Nearest ten thousand
Round \(76,284\) to the nearest ten thousand.
Exercise 6 – Nearest hundred thousand
Round \(482,615\) to the nearest hundred thousand.
Exercise 7 – Use the number line
Is \(347\) closer to \(340\) or \(350\)? Round \(347\) to the nearest ten.
Exercise 8 – Rounding a 9
Round \(999\) to the nearest ten.
Exercise 9 – Carrying across thousands
Round \(9,960\) to the nearest hundred.
Exercise 10 – Another halfway number
Round \(24,500\) to the nearest thousand.
Exercise 11 – Three places
Round \(358,429\) to the nearest ten thousand, the nearest thousand, and the nearest hundred.
Exercise 12 – Smallest and greatest
Find the smallest and the greatest whole numbers that round to 700 when rounded to the nearest hundred.
Exercise 13 – Estimate a sum
Estimate \(4{,}862 + 2{,}139\) by rounding each number to the nearest thousand.
Exercise 14 – Estimate a difference
Estimate \(52{,}816 – 19{,}374\) by rounding each number to the nearest ten thousand.
Exercise 15 – Stadium crowd
A Little League championship drew \(18,743\) fans. Round the crowd to the nearest thousand and to the nearest hundred.
Exercise 16 – Road trip estimate
Aisha’s family drove \(1,286\) miles on the first part of a road trip and \(874\) miles on the second part. Estimate the total miles by rounding each distance to the nearest hundred. Then find the exact total and decide whether it is close to the estimate.
Exercise 17 – Fundraiser change
Jamal’s class raised \(\$3,482.00\) this year and \(\$2,961.00\) last year. Estimate how much more they raised this year by rounding each amount to the nearest hundred dollars. Then find the exact difference.
Exercise 18 – Could it be the number?
A news story says about 40,000 people watched a parade. The number was rounded to the nearest ten thousand. Which of these could be the exact number of people: 35,999, 38,420, 44,100, 45,000? Explain.
Exercise 19 – Is $5,000 enough?
Mei needs three items for a school garden: seeds for \(\$1,879.00\), tools for \(\$2,246.00\), and soil for \(\$1,125.00\). She has \(\$5,000.00\). She estimates by rounding each cost to the nearest thousand. Then she estimates again by rounding to the nearest hundred. Decide which estimate helps her more, and find the exact total.
Exercise 20 – Find the mistake
Liam rounded \(6,495\) to the nearest ten and wrote \(6,490\). Explain his mistake and give the correct answer. Then round \(6,495\) to the nearest hundred.
