Question 6 and after
Question 10 and after
Remember
- To round, look at the digit to the right of the place you want.
- Digits 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 round up. Digits 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 round down.
- A number exactly halfway between two multiples rounds up: 2,500 rounds to 3,000.
- Then, a 9 can carry: 9,960 rounds to 10,000 at the nearest hundred.
- To estimate, round every number to the same place, then add or subtract.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade rounding quiz
- Students round a number like 8,980 down at the nearest hundred. The tens digit is 8, so the number rounds up to 9,000.
- Students round down when the digit to the right is 4 or more but they mix up the cutoff. Instead, digits 5 and above round up, and digits 4 and below round down.
- Students choose a number far from the reported value. Also, the exact number must be in the range that rounds to the report.
- Students agree that a halfway number rounds down. Instead, the rule sends a 5 up. Slow down at that step and check it twice.
Tips to get a high score
- Underline the rounding place, circle the digit to its right, and then decide. This three part habit works every time.
- Check that your rounded number is a multiple of the place value. For example, a hundred must end in two zeros.
- Teachers can use a halfway number as a short debate on why the rule sends it up. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.

4th grade rounding quiz: frequently asked questions
Why do halfway numbers round up?
People agreed on one rule so everyone gets the same answer. A number exactly halfway between two multiples could go either way. The rule sends it up, so 12,500 rounds to 13,000.
How do you estimate a sum by rounding to thousands?
Round each number to the nearest thousand, which makes the sum easy. For 4,810 plus 2,190, round to 5,000 plus 2,000, which is 7,000. The exact sum is also 7,000, so the estimate is excellent.
How do you know which numbers could round to a reported amount?
Find the range for the stated place. If a report gives 15,000 to the nearest thousand, the exact number is from 14,500 up to 15,499. A number such as 14,600 fits, but 14,400 does not.
