4th Grade Lines, Rays and Classifying Shapes Test with Answer Key (Free PDF)
This 4th grade lines and angles test covers lines, rays and classifying shapes (Common Core 4.G.A.1, 4.G.A.2), with a free PDF to print.
Key takeaway: This test helps fourth grade students show that they can name lines, rays, and segments, draw parallel and perpendicular lines, classify angles and triangles, and describe quadrilaterals.
- Topic: Lines, Rays and Classifying Shapes (4th grade)
- Content: 8 questions with point values, about 45 minutes
- Standards: 4.G.A.1, 4.G.A.2
- Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This test helps fourth grade students show that they can name lines, rays, and segments, draw parallel and perpendicular lines, classify angles and triangles, and describe quadrilaterals. Also, it is worth 20 points and takes 45 minutes.
The eight questions begin with naming figures and drawing lines, then classify angles and triangles from their measures. Then, later questions study a quadrilateral, complete a table of shapes, read a street map, and play a game of always, sometimes, or never. Also, show your reasoning wherever a question asks you to explain.

4th grade lines and angles test: questions
1 – Name the figure [2 pts]
First, use the figures to answer.
- Name Figure 1. (1 point)
- Name Figure 2. (1 point)
2 – Draw lines [2 pts]
- Draw two parallel lines. (1 point)
- Draw two perpendicular lines and mark the right angle. (1 point)
3 – Name the angles [2 pts]
Then, look at angles P and Q.
- Is angle P acute, right, or obtuse? (1 point)
- Is angle Q acute, right, or obtuse? (1 point)
4 – Classify triangles [2 pts]
- \(30^{\circ}, 60^{\circ}, 90^{\circ}\) (1 point)
- \(20^{\circ}, 30^{\circ}, 130^{\circ}\) (1 point)
5 – Study a quadrilateral [3 pts]
Also, look at the shape.
- How many pairs of parallel sides does it have? (1 point)
- How many right angles does it have? (1 point)
- What is the name of the shape? (1 point)
6 – Sort the shapes [3 pts]
| Shape | Pairs of parallel sides | Right angles |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | (a) | (b) |
| Trapezoid with slanted sides | (c) | (d) |
| Right triangle | (e) | (f) |
(3 points: 1 point for each row)
7 – Read the map [3 pts]
Pine St meets Oak St and makes a 60° angle, as shown.
- Name two streets that are parallel. (1 point)
- Name two streets that are perpendicular. (1 point)
- Is the 60° angle formed by Pine St and Oak St acute, right, or obtuse? (1 point)
Question 8 and after
8 – Always, sometimes, never [3 pts]
- A rectangle has four right angles. (1 point)
- Also, a triangle has two right angles. (1 point)
- Also, a quadrilateral has a pair of parallel sides. (1 point)
Key facts behind this 4th grade lines and angles test
- A line segment has two endpoints; a ray has one; a line has none.
- Parallel lines never meet, and perpendicular lines meet at a right angle (90°).
- Right angles are 90°, acute angles are less than 90°, and obtuse angles are greater than 90°.
- Then, a right triangle has exactly one right angle.
- Quadrilaterals are sorted by pairs of parallel sides and by right angles.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade lines and angles test
- Students draw two lines that look parallel but cross when extended. Also, use a ruler and keep the same distance between them.
- Students call a triangle acute when one angle is obtuse. Instead, one obtuse angle makes the whole triangle obtuse.
- Students name crossing streets as parallel. Also, parallel streets never meet, and crossing streets at an angle other than 90 degrees are not perpendicular.
- Students answer always when a statement is only sometimes true. Instead, think of a shape that makes the statement false before you choose.
Test-taking strategy
- Do the drawing questions with a ruler and a card corner. Then, neat drawings are easier to score and easier for you to check.
- For classification, find the largest angle first. That one angle decides whether a triangle is acute, right, or obtuse.
- Parents can review the night before by asking the child to name three real objects with parallel lines and three with right angles.

4th grade lines and angles test: frequently asked questions
How should I mark a right angle on a diagram?
Draw a small square in the corner where the two lines or sides meet. This mark tells the reader that the angle measures exactly 90 degrees. Without the mark, a drawing might only look like a right angle.
What should I do if a shape fits two names?
Choose the most exact name that the facts support, and mention the other if you can. A shape with four right angles and four equal sides is a square, which is also a rectangle. Teachers usually accept either if you give a reason.
Is a 45 degree angle acute, right, or obtuse?
A 45 degree angle is acute because it is less than 90 degrees. Acute angles look like the tip of a pizza slice, right angles look like a book corner, and obtuse angles open wider than a corner.
