Division meaning test answers: worked solutions

Question 1 – Shared dots [2 pts]

  1. \(20 \div 4 = 5\)
  2. 5 dots in each box, because \(4 \times 5 = 20\).
5555
20 ÷ 4 = 5.

Scoring: 1 point for the equation, 1 point for 5 dots in each box.

Question 2 – Bags of three [2 pts]

How many 3s are in 18? \(18 \div 3 = 6\). Check: \(6 \times 3 = 18\). Answer: 6 bags.

Scoring: 1 point for the equation, 1 point for 6 bags.

Question 3 – Beads on bracelets [2 pts]

  1. Sharing: \(24 \div 3 = 8\), so 8 beads.
  2. Grouping: \(24 \div 3 = 8\), so 8 bracelets.

Scoring: 1 point for each part. Both parts use the same equation with a different meaning.

Question 4 – Division as a missing factor [2 pts]

The equation is \(9 \times ? = 45\). Since \(9 \times 5 = 45\), the unknown is 5. Answer: \(45 \div 9 = 5\).

Scoring: 1 point for ‹9 \times ? = 45›, 1 point for the answer 5.

Question 5 – Find the unknown [2 pts]

  1. \(7 \times 9 = 63\), so 9.
  2. \(5 \times 8 = 40\), so 8.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct unknown.

Question 6 – Tape diagram [2 pts]

\(54 \div 6 = ?\), and \(6 \times 9 = 54\). Answer: 9.

54999999
Each part is 9.

Scoring: 1 point for the equation, 1 point for 9.

Question 7 – Make it true [2 pts]

  1. \(5 \times 6 = 30\), so 30.
  2. \(4 \times 9 = 36\), so 9.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct number.

Question 8 – Teams and bats [3 pts]

Teams: \(35 \div 5 = 7\). Bats: \(7 \times 2 = 14\). Answer: 14 bats.

Scoring: 1 point for ‹35 \div 5 = 7›, 1 point for multiplying by 2, 1 point for 14 bats.

Question 9 – Reading plan [3 pts]

Pages each day: \(63 \div 7 = 9\). Pages read in 4 days: \(4 \times 9 = 36\). Pages left: \(63 – 36 = 27\). Answer: 27 pages.

Scoring: 1 point for 9 pages a day, 1 point for 36 pages read, 1 point for 27 pages left.

Key facts
  • Division finds the size of each group or the number of groups.
  • In 24 ÷ 4 = 6, the 24 is the dividend, the 4 is the divisor, and the 6 is the quotient.
  • Dividing 42 by 6 asks: 6 times what number makes 42?
  • An unknown can be in any spot, as in 8 × ? = 48, ? ÷ 3 = 5, or 24 ÷ ? = 8.
  • Check any division answer by multiplying the quotient by the divisor.
