- Time: 40 minutes
- Total: 20 points
Multiplicative comparison test: questions
Question 1 – Equations and sentences [2 pts]
- Write a sentence that tells what \(36 = 9 \times 4\) means. (1 point)
- Write a multiplication equation for this sentence: 56 is 7 times as many as 8. (1 point)
Question 2 – More and times [2 pts]
Mei has 5 stickers. Sofia has 20 stickers.
- Write a sentence that tells how many more stickers Sofia has than Mei. (1 point)
- Write a sentence that tells how many times as many stickers Sofia has as Mei. (1 point)
Question 3 – Bar model [2 pts]
The bar model compares the number of pens with the number of pencils in a drawer. There are 8 pens. There are 3 times as many pencils as pens. Write an equation with the letter p for the number of pencils and solve it.
Question 4 – Unknown length [2 pts]
A python is 21 feet long. It is 7 times as long as a garden snake. Write an equation with the letter s for the length of the garden snake and solve it.
Question 5 – How many times [2 pts]
A scooter costs $72. A helmet costs $9. The scooter costs how many times as much as the helmet? Write an equation with the letter n and solve it.
Question 6 – Saving money [2 pts]
Noah saved \(\$15.00\). His sister saved 4 times as much as Noah.
- How much did his sister save? (1 point)
- How much more did his sister save than Noah? (1 point)
Question 7 – Marble collection [3 pts]
Aisha has 6 marbles. Liam has 5 times as many marbles as Aisha. Diego has 3 times as many marbles as Liam.
- How many marbles does Liam have? (1 point)
- How many marbles does Diego have? (1 point)
- How many marbles do the three friends have in all? (1 point)
Question 8 – Find the mistake [3 pts]
Ethan says that if Mei has 4 times as many stickers as Jamal, who has 6, then Mei has 10 stickers because 6 + 4 = 10.
- Find how many stickers Mei has. (1 point)
- Explain Ethan’s mistake. (1 point)
- Find how many more stickers Mei has than Jamal. (1 point)
Question 9 – Bus and van [2 pts]
A school bus holds 48 students. A minivan holds 6 students. The bus holds how many times as many students as the minivan? Write an equation with the letter n and solve it.
Key facts behind this multiplicative comparison test
- “A is n times as many as B” means A = n × B.
- “More than” and “fewer than” are additive comparisons; “times as many” is multiplicative.
- To find the bigger amount, multiply. To find the smaller amount or the number of times, divide.
- Use a letter for the unknown, such as 28 = 4 × b.
- A bar model with equal units shows the comparison clearly.
How to use this multiplicative comparison test
Time yourself: the test is designed for an average student in 45 minutes. Answer the questions you are sure of first, then come back to the longer ones and check your units.
